Synthetix is a decentralized synthetic asset issuance protocol built on Ethereum and Optimism. It enables the creation and trading of synthetic assets, known as Synths, that track the price of real-world assets like fiat currencies, commodities (gold, silver), stocks, indices, and even other cryptocurrencies. This brings traditional financial assets into the DeFi space, providing users with exposure without directly owning the underlying asset.
At its core, Synthetix functions through over-collateralization. SNX, the Synthetix network token, is staked as collateral to mint Synths. Typically, Synths are over-collateralized at a ratio of 400% to provide a buffer against price fluctuations. This over-collateralization ensures the system remains stable and liquid.
The minting of Synths allows users to participate in a variety of trading activities. Synthetix provides a platform for trading Synths against each other with minimal slippage and no order books. All trades are routed through a smart contract that utilizes the pooled collateral of SNX stakers as a counterparty. This model contrasts with traditional exchanges that rely on order books and market makers, potentially leading to improved efficiency and lower transaction costs.
SNX stakers are incentivized to provide collateral through staking rewards and trading fees. Staking rewards are distributed in the form of SNX inflation and a share of the trading fees generated on the Synthetix exchange. By staking SNX and contributing to the collateral pool, stakers earn passive income while contributing to the overall stability and liquidity of the platform.
Synthetix offers a wide range of Synths, categorized by their underlying asset:
- Fiat Currencies: sUSD, sEUR, sJPY, etc., allowing users to gain exposure to different currencies.
- Commodities: sGold, sSilver, providing access to precious metals markets.
- Cryptocurrencies: sBTC, sETH, sLINK, tracking the price of various cryptocurrencies.
- Inverse Synths: iBTC, iETH, which increase in value when the underlying asset's price decreases.
- Index Synths: sDEFI, which tracks the performance of a basket of DeFi tokens.
- Stocks: Tokenized stocks such as Tesla (TSLA) or Apple (AAPL), through collaboration with integrators.
Synthetix has evolved considerably since its inception. The protocol has transitioned to a multi-chain architecture, deploying on Optimism, an Ethereum Layer-2 scaling solution.
